Heralds

Heralds |ˈherəlds|
noun
1. an official messenger bringing news.
2. a person or thing viewed as a sign that something is about to happen.

We as human beings are constantly sending signals to each other based around our unique cultures. We silently communicate using objects. We converse with colors. We squabble through symbols. Whether conscious or subconscious, we surround and even adorn ourselves with things that tell something about us. Even if it is miniscule, we are always sending messages.

I’ve entitled this series Heralds because these objects and symbols and things we call a home, or clothing, or toys are also just as much, mediums to catagorize ourselves. In essence we are sending out silent warnings or inaudible welcomes all the time.

For this series I have chosen to focus on two mediums that are some of the first heralds perceived when meeting someone new. The welcome mat to our home, and the clothing we choose to wear.

Pachydermal

I was shooting a bit in some alley while waiting for my wife to come pick me up from a study session at the library when I saw some crazy shapes of paint on some old dumpster. They all reminded me of old cave paintings/ abstract art. This was my favorite, it looked like a very sober elephant. One who would definitely never forget something. Oh how I envy him.

Small Fries

This was during a project for a finance class. It was a product analysis project where we compared fries from a few different restaurants. This was one of the stops, and as usual, the fries were gone in a matter of minutes leaving the small undesirables behind. Aww, poor little guys.

Still Lives

I shot this one of a drawing i made for my wife while we were at a "Cashflow" game on campus.

New Hair

ok, so Lo got a new haircut and i couldn't wait to shoot a portrait of her in her new hair.

Window Sea

This reminded me of plankton floating in a nocturnal sea. On the way home I noticed how our filthy (dusty really, there was no grim. We're sanitary people.) windshield caught the street lights. i loved the abstract landscape in it. I didn't have the tripod, so it was pretty tricky.

Self Portrait #8

I have this idea in my head. But i'm having trouble explaining it. It's kinda . . . fuzzy.

Elder Davie!

One last gathering again before sending him off the next day. Love ya. That's his friend Jennifer to the left. I don't think he appreciated my shutter going off all night. However, I like this almost-unapproachable-portrait better. It feels more real, authentic.

Davie

YAY! I finally have a DSLR I can call my very own. And just in time to snap some of my brother Davie before he leaves for Chile as "Elder McKay." He got most of the "handsome" i think. We had a pre-Thanksgiving/Christmas Dinner with him the day before he was set apart.

Baila! Blaila!

This is one of the shots I got at Extravadance, a dance performance at BYU-Idaho. The dancers did amazing. And here is a photo.

SkyLights

(So, I'm a little behind.) We were on our way down to a meeting when i saw the subtle beauty of the sunset. I was however even more intrigued by field lights. I chuckled because, without realizing it, I had personified the lights and I saw that they were angry at the sky. They were competing with God's elegant sunset of course. That was a bad idea. I love depicting the relationship/contrast between man's creations and God's creations. It is always a sweet reminder of how much we need to rely on him but also how, we are learning by the same process and taking the same steps He has taken.

BlurByByeBye

I'm a little behind on my posts. It's crazy how busy life gets. It's almost as if everything blurs together till all that's left are waves of obligations. Keeping my head up where i can breathe is the tricky part.

Rubber Boots

It seems it was wet enough outside today, that Lauren decided it was a good day to get out the boots. The boots. But then again, isn't it nice to take them off?

Finally

Here is the start to the daily photo assignment for my photo class. We are to post one shot a day and kind of make it like a visual journal. I kind of like the idea and will probably continue with it after the assignment. So here is the first. Today was a long day of school and I couldn't wait to get back home and see my wife. She also had a rather filled day of work. So it was nice just to sit and . . . we'll sit, not to do anything but be in each others company.
